The Premier League team said on Thursday that Erik ten Hag has signed a contract extension that would keep him at Old Trafford until 2026. After a disappointing 2023–24 Premier League season, there was a great deal of speculation over the Dutchman’s future. However, he helped the team defeat Manchester City in the FA Cup.

Ten Hag will remain at the club following an evaluation by the club’s new part-owner, British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe, according to information that was extensively published in the British media last month.

In a statement, Manchester United stated that Erik ten Hag had extended his tenure as the team’s first-team manager until June 2026.

The former Ajax manager acknowledged that more needed to be done to catch up to United’s Premier League rivals. His contract was set to expire in 2025. “We can proudly look back on the last two years and see two trophies as well as numerous instances of progress from where we were when I joined,” he remarked.

“However, we must also be clear that there is still lots of hard work ahead to reach the levels expected of Manchester United, which means challenging for English and European titles.”

“Erik has reinforced his record as one of the most consistently successful coaches in European football with two trophies in the past two seasons,” stated Dan Ashworth, sporting director of Manchester United.

“While the club’s review of last season highlighted areas for improvement, it also reached a clear conclusion that Erik was the best partner for us to work with in driving up standards.”

After winning the League Cup in 2023 and finishing third in the league in his debut season, 54-year-old Ten Hag gave United fans hope that they might contend for the Premier League title in 2023–2024.

However, they finished with a negative goal differential, losing 14 games, and a massive 31 points behind champion Manchester City.
