The security authorities in Burkina Faso have comforted that dozens of persons have been killed in an attack that happened in the country on Sunday.

The attack occurred in the village of Barsalogho in north-central Burkina Faso on Saturday by unknown armed men who are suspended to armed theorists.

Speaking on the attack, Communications Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo stated that the attack was carried out by some criminals who are out to destroy lives and the stability of the country.

A resident in the community who spoke to AFP noted that attackers had arrived in the community at about 9 am on Saturday, launching an attack that claimed numerous persons who are largely civilians and some security personnel.

A security operative in the community who spoke in the same line as the resident noted that several persons in the community were killed in the attack, including some security personnel in the community. The security agent noted that most of the people injured in the attack were taken to the hospital in the regional capital of Kaya, which is 45 kilometres (28 miles) away from the attacked village.

Despite speculations that the attack was carried out by Jihadist rebels Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, no one claimed responsibility for the attack till Sunday evening.

Another resident in the village who spoke with the press noted that the major victims of the attack were children who had volunteered to assist military officers in the town to help soldiers dig trenches around the town, which was said to be used to protect the village from possible attacks.

Another source who spoke to the media noted that the soldiers at auxiliary troops were prompt in their responses, which limits the level of the tragedy that would have come from the attack.

A source in the Kaya hospital confirmed that more than a hundred victims from the attack were rushed to the hospital after the attack on Saturday.

The chief of the medical centre had called on all the personnel in the hospital to resume duty to help in the protection of lives and properties; the call was made after the number in the hospital outgrown the number of medical personnel in the hospital after the attack.

The security minister, Mahamadou Sana, confirmed the attack and noted that several civilians were killed in the attack by the criminals. He also confirmed that Soldiers and members of a civilian force that supports the military — Volunteers for the Defence of the Fatherland (VDP) were victims of the attack.

In the country, the Jihadist rebels, along with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group, have continued to launch different attacks in the country in the past years, which started in 2015. The attacks have claimed thousands of lives, with other displaced living in internally displaced person camps around the state; the number of displaced persons in the state currently stands at two million, the authorities have said.
