Police destroys explosive devices in Niger State

The police in Niger State has announced the discovery of a large number of dangerous weapons, which included bombs and Improvised Explosive Devices, which were buried in different locations in the state.

The weapons were uncovered in Galadima-Kogo in Shiroro Local Government Area, Mutun-Daya in Munya LG, and the Gbeganu Area of Minna.

According to the police, the explosive devices have been suspected to have been buried by the terrorists in different locations in the state. It disclosed that after the suspicion, the police would investigate the sources of the explosives.

In a statement made public by the command spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun on Tuesday explained that the discovery of the explosives was made by the counter-insurgency operations conducted from 2021 to 2023, which was conducted by the collaborative effort involving the police and other security agencies in the state.

He noted that the police took a bold step to neutralise the dengarious explosives devices on August 22, 2024, at a site which was located behind the Zuma Rock in Suleja. The spokesperson disclosed that the Officer supervised the exercise in Charge of the EOD-CBRN (Explosive Ordinance Disposal – Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear) Unit of the Command SP Mohammed Mamun.

It was further disclosed that the directive was given by the Commissioner of Police, CP Shawulu Danmamman,

The PPRO gave a detailed account of the explosives as Four pipe-borne IEDs buried in the ground recovered at Galadima-Kogo, Shiroro LGA on 27th September 2021, Explosives concealed in empty shells of suspected military missiles and a 5kg cooking gas cylinder recovered at Mutun-Daya, Shiroro LGA on 11th February 2022, and Explosives concealed in a ten-litre jerrican, three pieces of suspected military hand grenades and a bow-shaped improvised material recovered at Gbeganu area of Minna on 24th October 2023.

The command spokesperson disclosed that the development was coming less than a week after the suspected bandits carried out an attack that claimed the lives of over 13 farmers in Niger state.
