The Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, also known as Shi’ites through Sheikh Abdullahi, have alleged that the Nigerian police force has denied the individuals arrested during the recent procession of the federal capital territory access to their lawyers and family members.

The allegations were made on Tuesday in Abuja during a press briefing organised by the after the incident that took place on Sunday that claimed several lives in the FCT. He noted that the police refused to allow the arrested individuals to have any form of interaction with their lawyers and family members, and he noted that the act poses some human rights violations.

While speaking, he noted that the police had attacked a primary school located at Airport Road on Monday at the invitation of the school. He noted that the police had arrested some people who were innocent and did not commit any crime.

He also claimed that the police had, on August 27, attacked the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, FCT; after the attack, he went on to claim that patients were arrested and detained in the process. Speaking further, he noted that such an incident had taken place in 2019 where innocent patients, including one Ja’afar Muhammad, who later died in police custody.

Speaking on their prescription by the federal government, Shi’ites noted that they are a religious movement in the country that the government can not ban. They called the attention of all relevant authorities in the country to intervene and release their members without any condition.

The movement called on relevant authorities to call the police to order. It further threatened that if the police were not called to order, things might get out of hand.
