Former MTN CEO Sifiso Dabengwa, dies after long battle with cancer

The Former MTN Group CEO,  Sifiso Dabengwa, was confirmed dead by a family source on Monday after a long battle with cancer.

The spokesperson to the family who confirmed the death of the CEO explained that the former African communication giant died on Monday after a long battle with cancer.

The statement noted that the CEO, before his death, had been working in the communication industry while handling other businesses.

According to the statement, “His tenure as CEO of MTN Group from 2011 to 2015 was marked by visionary leadership, integrity, and dedication that drove significant advancements in the industry,” he said.

“He was an advocate for education and a fervent believer in the power of technology to transform lives.”

Before his death, he was married to Naspers South Africa chief executive Phuthi Mahanyele-Dabengwa, who gave birth to four children.

His best stint in the communication industry was his time as the MTN group chief executive and president between 2011 and 2015. He took over the position after Phuthuma Nhleko’s resignation on 31 March 2011.

His early days in the MTN group were when he served as the MTN’s group chief operating officer.

His earlier days in business were when he joined Executive Director at Eskom. His excellent service got his first position at MTN in 1999

His first big promotion took place in 2004, when he was promoted to chief operating officer and then to chief executive officer of MTN Nigeria.

After a long stay in Nigeran, the business guru returned to South Africa and served a close role with Nhleko on the development and execution of the group’s growth strategy.

He got appointed as a director at Eskon on January 18, 2018, but he left the role on 21 July 2020 after sending an immediate effect resignation letter to the organisation.

He holds a BSc in Electrical Engineering and an MBA degree from reputable schools around the world.
