The England-born Greece international and former Sheffield United defender George Baldock passed away at 31. The family announced the shocking news of the untimely demise of Baldock on Wednesday.

The statement read, “We can confirm that George has sadly passed away,” As a family, we are in shock at this terrible loss.” According to the report, his body was found in the swimming pool at his residence in Glyfada, southern Athens.

Sheffield United, his former club, was also shocked at the news, noting that the defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane. He was extremely popular with supporters, staff, and teammates who wore red and white shirts alongside him. “The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George’s family and friends.”

Also mourning the death of the defender, the Greek Football Federation, on its part, expressed agony while bidding Baldock goodbye.”With deep sadness and pain, the National Team and the Hellenic Football Federation say goodbye to George Baldock. There are no words to describe the human pain caused by the news of the untimely loss of one of our young people. The moment calls for silence. Condolences to his family. Condolences from his second family. Goodbye.”

Before his death, Baldock had made four appearances for Panathinaikos and started in their goalless draw with Olympiakos on Sunday.

In a statement, Panathinaikos, a club he joined in the summer after seven years at the Blades, lamented the defender’s sudden departure. “We are shocked by the loss of our George. “The family of Panathinaikos mourns his untimely death. We stand with the family and loved ones of George Baldock.

Baldock started his career at MK Dons in 2009, where he played more than 100 times. Since then, the former Sheffield United has Played with other clubs, including Northampton and Oxford United, before joining Sheffield United in 2017. He appeared 219 times in all the competitions for the club, aiding the club to be promoted to the Premier League in 2019 and again in 2023

Although Baldock was born in Buckingham, he chose to represent Greece in May 2022, leading to his call into the national team by manager Gus Poyet for the first time in 2022. A 1-0 win over Northern Ireland at Windsor Park in Belfast for Greece the following month led to his fame in June 2022. George Henry Ivor Baldock was born on 9 March 1993 and died on October 9, 2024.
