MTN Nigeria has announced the introduction of paper-based, biodegradable SIM cards as part of its eco-friendly drive to promote sustainability and reduce environmental impact.

The introduction was announced on Friday in a statement made public by the telecom giants. It was noted that the new introduction was in connection with the company’s Project Zero initiative, which aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2040.

The company, which currently has 8 million subscribers, disclosed that the programme, which is a new initiative, will be available for purchase in selected stores of the company in Abuja and Lagos before it gets to the other parts of the country,

The statement noted that the shift from the plastic-based SIM cards to the new model was critical in the steps taken by the company in ombating plastic pollution and integrating eco-friendly practices into its operations.

Last week, the Nigerian Communications Commission disclosed that it was planning to issue a revised corporate governance code, which it said is designed to align the telecom sector with global environmental, social, and governance standards. This new step by the organization is in the direction of the regulating organization.

MTN further disclosed that the biodegradable SIM cards are produced by a local supplier, reinforcing its support for local businesses and driving sustainable economic growth.

It was noted that the new SIM cards, made from 100 per cent biodegradable materials, provide an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional polyvinyl chloride SIM cards, which contribute to waste pollution due to limited recycling options.

The company further noted that its new step would potentially help reduce carbon emissions associated with the production and disposal of SIM cards, further embedding sustainability in its supply chain.

Responding, the Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Tobe Okigbo, stated that the new eco-friendly SIM cards represent part of the company’s continuous commitment to environmental responsibility, as well as its dedication to reducing waste, supporting local Nigerian vendors, and integrating sustainability into business operations and the daily lives of the people.

Also, in his reaction, the General Manager of Sustainability and Shared Value, Adekemi Adisa, added that the people of the country and the environment in which they live drive the innovative measures that the company takes.

The General Manager noted that the launch of the recyclable SIM cards embodies the commitment to sustainability, encouraging the customers to make eco-friendly choices, reducing waste, and paving the way for a more environmentally conscious future for Nigerians.
