Who was King Von?
King Von, whose real name is Dayvon Daquan Bennett, was among the three people who were killed in a shooting on November 6, 2020, outside a club in Atlanta. He was a gangster from Chicago, Illinois, affiliated with the Black Disciples gang. He was arrested severally for allegedly orchestrating and carrying out shootings that took people’s lives, including Malcolm Stuckey and others.
King Von’s Early Life and Education
King Von was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 9, 1994, in the family of Walter ‘Silk’ Bennett and Natasha ‘Taesha’ Chambers. While growing up, King Von’s father was incarcerated on several occasions, which caused Von to be raised primarily by his mother alongside his nine siblings.
Walter Bennett (Von’s father) was shot in a gang-related shooting, which led to his death. Von was eleven (11) years old when his father died; his mother became solely responsible for his upbringing.
King Von enrolled at Hyde Park Academy on the south side of Chicago. In the school, he met Chicago’s rapper, G Herbo, who inspired him to make drill music. While in high school, he was very active in sporting activities and even participated in the varsity baseball team. Due to his rebellious and unguided behaviours, he got into trouble severally with the law and was incarcerated when he was 16 years old. Consequently, he got his GED in a juvenile detention centre. However, he was determined to further his education and enrolled at South Suburban College in Holland, Illinois.
Nevertheless, that wasn’t the end of his trouble, as he was again arrested on a first-degree murder charge in 2014 following the shooting of college student Malcolm Stuckey. King Von was later discharged and acquitted; however, he couldn’t continue with his education and decided to channel all his energies into his music career.
King Von’s Career
King Von’s interest in music began quite early. He started singing rap songs with his friends while he was still in his early teens. However, it was not until he got out of prison—after being acquitted of murder—that he became so serious about his music career. His talent caught the attention of Chicago rapper Lil Durk, who later signed him to his record labels.
Soon after being signed, Von released the breakout hit Crazy Story. As his music career gained traction, he relocated to Atlanta, where he worked on his debut mixtape, Grandson Vol. 1. King Von and Lil Durk collaborated on several tracks on his debut mix tape, which recorded tremendous success as the song reached No. 75 on the Billboard 200. Soon after the first mixtape, he started working on a second project, Levon James, which was released in 2019.
King started working on his debut album, Welcome to O’Block, which was released in October 2020. Unfortunately, it was his last project alive, as he died a few days after its release. Nonetheless, he had worked on several other songs that were yet to come before he met his untimely death. Most of them were later released as part of his (posthumous) album, which includes “What It Means to Be King”, released in 2022.
King Von’s Net Worth
King Von’s musical career didn’t last for too long before he died; however, in the short period of about two years that he was actively into music, he made a name for himself as one of the up-and-coming artists, especially in the drill, hip hop, trap, and gangsta rap genres. At the time of his death, he was estimated to be worth around $750,000, all earnings from his music.
