Yesterday’s Georgia shooting, which has been described as the deadliest school shooting in the US this year, has resulted in the death of four people. In contrast, nine others sustained injuries during the mass shooting, which reportedly occurred at Apalachee High School in Winder, Barrow County.
According to reports, the victims include two 14-year-old students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, as well as two teachers at the institution, Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie.
Both teachers were mathematics teachers and Aspinwall was also an assistant football coach, according to the school’s website.
While the other nine injured victims have been reportedly hospitalised and are expected to survive, sources disclose that the police have also arrested the shooter, Colt Gray, who is currently in custody.
The 14-year-old suspect, who is also a student at the school where the shooting occurred, reportedly surrendered when security operatives arrived at the scene of the shooting.
He will be charged with murder and tried as an adult in the coming days, according to security operatives who spoke with reporters in Georgia after the incident.
Authorities say investigations are still ongoing to find out how the suspect got the rifle he used into the school.
Gray executed the act, which local sheriff Jud Smith described as “pure evil”, with an AR-platform weapon, specifically an AR-15-style rifle.
It was also gathered that last year, both Gray and his father were questioned by the FBI regarding “anonymous tips about online threats to commit a school shooting.” However, no arrests were made at the time due to a lack of probable cause.
CNN reports that Apalachee High School had received a phone threat earlier in the morning warning that there would be shootings at five schools and that Apalachee would be the first. However, no findings in that regard have been made sequel to the shooting.
