In the heat of the political tussle in Rivers State gearing towards ousting out Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, a High Court sitting in Oyigbo on Friday has ordered the immediate halt of every move to impeach the governor and his deputy, pending the determination of the suit filed before it.

The court ordered the Rivers State Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Amadi, the Martins Amaewhule-led House of Assembly, and its clerk to halt every proceedings and moves attempting to impeach the governor again, after similar attempts earlier led to the declaration of a six months state of emergency in the state.

This comes as the State House of Assembly are bent on going ahead with the impeachment procedures and had written to Justice Amadi to empanel a seven-member body to oversee the allegations preparatory to impeaching Fubara and his deputy, Prof Ngozi Odu. The allegations bothers on misappropriation of the state’s funds, obstructing the Rivers State House Assembly from performing her duties, among other alleged gross misconducts.

However, the court order on Friday, restrained Justice Amadi from “receiving, forwarding, considering and or however acting on any request, resolution, articles of impeachment or other document or communication from one to 27 defendants for the purposes of constituting a panel to investigate the purported allegations of misconduct against the governor and his deputy for seven days.”

Meanwhile, four Assembly members earlier opted out and kicked against the move to impeach Fubara and his deputy, but in a new development, they have reportedly made a U-turn and have started clamouring for the removal of the governor and his deputy, raising concerns over what or who could be influencing their loyalty.

The case has been adjourned to January 23, 2026 by Justice Fiberesima for further hearing and determination of the fate of the governor and his deputy.
