A Nigerian lady has sparked reactions among fans after calling for the ban of traditional bride price.
According to the unidentified lady, paying exorbitant money for a bride should be considered improper as it has yielded several marital issues. She detailed that most times, men foresee paying for their bride as a term of transaction, thereby presenting their bride as a property, which may likely invite control over the bride.
She suggested that this scenario should be canceled as far as she is concerned. Also, she disclosed that most poor family, use this medium to extort the groom family as they are aware they won’t resist any financing approach.
She further opined that while it looks odd, her tribe pay 5k for bride price and with the view of that she can’t be subjected to be an property and be treated as one by a man. She finalised that bride price should be banned.
Her words:
“Bride price needs to be canceled in Nigeria. You see bride price, let them ban it because a lot of men think because they paid a lady’s bride price, they’ve acquired her as property. And many parents use bride price to sell their children out, which needs to be stopped.”
“How much is bride price? From my side, it is ₦5,000. Do you know the cost of expensive bride prices? The poorer the family, the higher the bride price. For richer families, the bride price is lower. Many families use this tradition to extort the groom’s family because they know whatever they demand as at that moment will be brought.”
“This practice should be canceled because some men marry these girls and start treating them as property. A woman is not your property. So you’re telling me that if you pay my father ₦5,000, you will start treating me like your property when we marry? Is it ₦5,000 that trained me?…”
Nigerians couldn’t hold their nerves and reacted massively according to their views.
