The Kano State Government has announced the arrest of over 632 suspects for vandalism and looting of public and private properties during the hunger protest in the state.
The governor’s spokesman, Sanusi Dawakin Tofa, who announced the arrest and arraignment of the suspects explained that the security agencies have arrested the 632 suspects for destroying public properties in the state.
He added that the state government has begun modalities for training youths in different areas to curb the repeat of such incidents. He also noted that the training will help youths become self-reliant in many areas of their lives.
The spokesperson also announced a committee of inquiry will be constituted by the state to establish the reasons for the loot and killings in these states. He also noted that some of the genuine protesters had submitted their grievances to the state government, which would be transferred to President Bola Tinubu.
Tofa also warned that the state government would not tolerate any act of subordination or criminality in the name of protest; he explained that the state government would prosecute every individual found guilty of destroying public property.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, a mobile court in the state ordered the remand of 632 individuals arrested for the vandalism and destruction of public properties during the end bad governance protest recently held in the state.
The arrested individuals (Defendants) have been charged with criminal conspiracy, theft, unlawful assembly, insightful disturbance and mischief by fire.
The procedures, which were held on Tuesday, were presided over by senior judicial officials: Ibrahim Mansur, Hadiza Rabiu-Bello, and Abba Muttaka.
The State Director of Public Prosecution, Salisu Tahir, told the court that the defendants had commented on the crops being accused during a protest that took place on August 1st in the state.
He explained that the arrested individuals had broken into the shops of different individuals in the state, taking away their goods. He established that the offences being accused contravene sections 97, 287, 229, 336, 349, and 247 of the Penal Code.
Some of the defendants pleaded guilty to the charges, while some individuals pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The court remanded the suspects, while proceedings were adjoined till August 19 for resumption of trial.
