Abia road crash claims 11, 8 others injured

The Abia State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, on Wednesday night, confirmed a road traffic accident that resulted in the death of 11 passengers. The incident occurred around the Arungwa Village, opposite Arab Contractors Construction Company on the Port Harcourt-Enugu Expressway.

In a statement on Wednesday, the FRSC Commander in the state, Ngozi Ezeoma, confirmed the incident. The crash involved a Nissan Caravan commercial bus with registration number SSM 320 ZR, colour white, conveying 19 persons, eight male adults and 11 female adults, travelling to Enugu, ramming into a HOWO commercial truck with registration number T2828LA, yellow.

The statement further explained that a rescue team was deployed to the scene of the incident from the FRSC RS 9.31 Aba and RS 9.32 km78 Aba Unit Commands to conduct a rescue operation. She stated that the deployed officers swiftly arrived at the scene to start the rescue efforts.

She explained that on the night of Wednesday, a total of 10 persons, comprising five male adults and five female adults, were injured in the accident. In contrast, four male adults and five female adults died instantly as a result of how severe the incident was. She disclosed that the dead victims were taken to the mortuary instantly, and the injured individuals were taken to the hospital for adequate treatment.

She added that two other victims had died after they were taken to the hospital. The two victims consisted of one adult and a female adult, while another person was referred to the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia for more advanced treatment.

The death of the latest two brought the figures of fatalities to 11 persons who have died from the incident, while eight persons were injured and still in the hospital.

According to the commander, an investigation from the FRSC showed that the vehicles had engaged in overspeeding. She explained that a further update would be passed to the public when all investigations were concluded.
