The government of Adamawa State, led by Umaru Fintir, the Governor, has announced the commencement of the payment of the new national minimum wage to the state government’s staff weeks after it was signed into law by the president of the country, Bola Tinubu.
The new government approval of the national minimum wage stands at N70,000 against the former N30,000.
The new minimum wage was signed by the president of the country after back and forth with labour leaders in the country, which resulted in industrial action that crippled the country’s economy for days.
The state government has commenced payment with the State government-employed workers and has confirmed that the workers of the local governments will start enjoying the new increment by the end of September 2024.
Some governors in the country have received the news of the new minimum wage with mixed feelings. Some state governors have stated that the new allocation given to states will not be enough to pay the new minimum wage, explaining that it was the economic reality.
Some civil servants in the state who spoke to journalists were excited about the commencement of the payment by the governor. They appreciated the leadership of the state for taking the welfare of the state workers highly, which will boast commitment and help in the growth of the state.
The payment by the Adamawa state governor shows that he is the first governor in the country to pay the new minimum, as many governors have stated that the new payment template is still being worked out by the government.
