Borno Flood: Police recovers 11 decomposed bodies from affected communities continues rescue operations

The police in Borno state have announced the recovery of eleven decomposed bodies who have died from the recent flood incident, which took in the state capital and some other local governments.

The Police Public Relations officer of the state disclosed the numbers in a statement released on behalf of the police command led by the state Commissioner of Police, Yusufu Mohammed,

The PPRO disclosed that the police have been able to recover the bodies after a search and rescue operation was conducted by the police in the state from Tuesday when the flood incident started, til Thursday and recovered the said victims.

He noted the command regrates the incident that led to the death of the 11 persons, but the rescue operations by the police were still ongoing in the areas affected in order to rescue more persons.

The statement noted that the rescued victims’ data was from reports submitted by various divisions in the states. The divisions include Lamisula, Jere, GRA, Bulabulin, and Dandal Divisional Police Headquarters in Maiduguri. The 11 recovered bodies, according to the police, were from the operation conducted between 10 am and 2 pm on 11/09/2024 and 12/09/2024

The PPRO disclosed that because of the gravity of the incident, the police in the state will continue to conduct rescue operation across the communities affected by the incident. He noted that the police in the state have decided to dedicate all the possible efforts to ensure that all the trapped victims were rescued effectively.

It was reported that the flood incident in the state had claimed at least 30 lives while 414,000 people were displaced from their homes in Maiduguri, the state capital.

In a report from the National Emergency Management Agency on the cause of the incident, they disclosed that the heavy rain that the state witnessed triggered the collapse of a section of the Alau Dam, which overflowed the neighbouring households’ communities. According to the United Nations Human Rights Refugee Council and Maiduguri Metropolitan Council residents, the flood incident was the worst flood in the state in the past 30 years.

The spoke spokesperson if the National Emergengy Management Agency Wednesday, while speaking on the number of casultaies noted that at least 30 persons have died from the flood incident which almost five hundred thousand persons were displaced in the state.

The recent incident has been compared to the devastign flood which took place in 1994 with most people stating that the food incident has grown to be worst that the earlier 1994 incident.
