Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has announced an end to the temporary public policy that has allowed visitors to apply for work permits when they arrive there.
The policy was introduced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canadain August 2020 to aid visitors who had failed to level the country amidst the COVID-19 pandemic–related travel restrictions.
According to the policy, visitors could apply for work permits in the country after they have arrived in the country without leaving the country.
Also, the policy had allowed foreign nationals who has work permits in the past 12 months but had changed their status to visitors in Canada to apply for work legally as they await the approval of their decisions on the work permit submitted.
In a statement announced on its website in the week, the government admitted that the policy was due to expire on February 28, 2025, but the IRCC had decided to end the policy in order to an overhaul, which is currently going on to recalibrate the number of temporary residents in Canada and preserve the integrity of the immigration system,
It was also disclosed that some persons in the country were using the policy to allow people to work in the country without getting authorization from the government. The government noted that applications submitted before August 28, 2024, under the policy, would be processed despite the halt of the policy.
The current development has been seen as a policy that will impact the people who intend to migrate to the country, including Nigerians, who have seen the country as the best destination.
