The Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement released in Warri on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the incident occurred on August 12, 2024, when the CP Special Squad, based in Ughelli, embarked on an investigation with Joel Ofoye, a previously apprehended suspect.

The PPRO explained that when the command started the investigation, the suspect led them to the Ewu community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of the state; he noted the operatives were attacked by a gang of criminals who tried to take away the apprehended suspect, Joel Ochuko.

However, the relentless efforts of the police made the criminals flee from the scene of the attack.

The PPRO noted that the suspect, who was shot severally by the police, was taken to the General Hospital in Ughelli but succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.

Listing the weapons recovered from the suspects, the PPRO noted that a Beretta pistol with four rounds of live ammunition, a pump-action shotgun with nine cartridges, and a locally fabricated revolver were recovered from the criminals.

In another success recorded, the PPRO noted that the police in the state have stepped up their efforts to bring to justice all kidnapping syndicates in the state; this, he said, was due to the information received when a 29-year-old victim in Kokori Community, Ethiope East LGA, on February 17, 2024, was abdicated by gunmen.

The victim was reportedly kidnapped from his resodidnce in the Sapele area of the state. He noted that a total of N5 million was transferred from his bank account before releasing him. The victim had told the police about the incident after he was let go by the criminals.

An investigation into the incident was ordered by the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda.

The CP special squad, who worked with credible intelligence provided by the victim of the attack led by the ASP Julius Robinson, raided the hideouts of the suspect, who has been known as “Sapiro,” around the Sapele areas of the state in Sapele.

It was further disclosed that a search through the apartments of the suspect resulted in the finding of a Beretta pistol.

Other members of the squad were arrested b the police during the operation, their names includes, ony Binitie, a.k.a. ‘Bobo,’ the gang leader from Big-Warri Community in Warri South LGA; Ejiro Ewuba, a native of Uwelogbo Community in Isoko LGA but residing in Sapele; and Ayuba Hussaini, a resident of Hausa Quarters, Sapele. He was said to have received the valuables of the criminals.

He had reportedly taken a transfer of N1 million from the account of the victim; all the suspects, according to the police, have confessed to the crimes.
