The Edo state government has clarified the controversy surrounding the rice received from the federal government for distribution in the state.
In a press conference organized in the state on Wednesday by the commissioner for information and orientation, Chris Nehikhare explained that the state had received a few bags of rice for distribution early this year. Still, the quantity of rice was insufficient to alleviate the state’s hunger level.
He explained that the bags of rice delivered in the state were all 25kg, providing more detail. He explained that the rice was distributed in the state according to a list given to it by the government. According to the commissioner, some of the rice was given to the less privileged, the IDP and other indigenes of the state.
He explained that the state government had given the Christian association in the state 2.2 billion naira to purchase rice for the people of the state; he also noted that the organization was asked to purchase Garri, Yam, and other products that would help the people.
He categorically noted that the state government did not buy Rice or any food item to be distributed.
Speaking on the rice trucks provided by the federal government, the commissioner noted that the rice was distributed to the local government areas, where the product was given to deserving individuals in the state’s rural areas.
The commissioner also stated that the rice was adequately distributed according to the template given by the federal government.
