In recent figures released, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) stated that the flooding in the country affected 227,494 people and damaged 32,837 houses in 2024.
On Thursday, the director-general (DG) of NEMA stated that flood incidents were recorded in 27 federation states, and 16,488 hectares of farmland with crops were destroyed.
The statement stated that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been active in responding to flood incidents in different communities in the country. It was established that an impact assessment has started to determine the amount of destruction, and the exercise is being carried out alongside the different State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs).
The statement established that NEMA has been able to respond actively because preparations were made early enough, awaiting the start of the rains. She noted that search and rescue operations were also deployed to the affected communities while all the individuals in the organization were placed on red alerts.
The DG also confirmed that the agency has started the distribution of relief items to communities and individuals who were highly affected by the flood incident.
She also stated that the agency is highly committed to efficient disaster management and urged stakeholders to prepare to be active at short notice plans and prepare for the flood in some parts of the country.
The DG charged farmers not to be wary of the dryness experienced in some of the federation states as the rain will return soon. According to her, Nimet had predicted the situation in the past.
She charged the residents currently staying in the flood-prone areas to vacate the areas as soon as possible and seek refuge in the regions that are safe before the peak of the rains.
Famers in some parts of the country have lamented the seizure of the rains, resulting in the deaths of some crops on the farms. Meanwhile, some communities in the north have lamented the level of rains, which has destroyed properties worth millions.
