The Kano State government has announced that 49 people have been killed and 226 communities affected by the flood, which has affected the state’s 27 Local Government Areas from the beginning of the year till date. The figures were announced by the Kano State Emergency Management Agency on Wednesday.
While speaking on the figures on Wednesday during a pressing in the state, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, Isyaku Abdullahi-Kubarachi, explained that the state has experienced a high level of destruction from the flood incident in the past months.
In an earlier focus presented by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, it was predicted that the 14 local governments in the state would be expressing high intensity of rainfall, which could result in flooding in the state.
The SEMA boss disclosed that the state affected includes Tudun Wada, Gwale, Wudil, Danbatta, Ajingi, Dala, Gwarzo, Madobi, Bichi, Kano Municipal, Karaye, Tarauni, Minjibir, Bebeji, Rogo, Shanono, Kabo, Garin Malam, and Ungogo. The other affected areas were Kumbotso, Nasarawa, Kura, Dawakin Kudu, Dawakin Tofa, Gezawa, Rogo, and Bagwai Local Government Areas.
He disclosed that the flood incident in the state had destroyed 6,583 houses, affecting 38,814 people. He also disclosed that a total of 8,289 farmlands, equivalent to 36,265 hectares, were destroyed, while 1,414 people were displaced and 139 were injured,
The agency further disclosed that it had promptly responded to the incidents by visiting the affected communities to sympathise with the residents and on behalf of the state government by distributing relief materials to alleviate their suffering.
The SEMA boss also disclosed that the agency had, in the past months, collaborated with several stakeholders in organizing workshops in the state agencies to provide practical solutions to the flood and other environmental issues affecting the state and prevent the hazardous activities from reoccurring.
The boss also applauded the governor of the state, Abba Yusuf, for the timely provision of necessary logistics and assistance, which has aided the agency in responding to incidents in the state.
The Executive Secretary also cautioned all the individuals that have built structures on water ways to stop the act as the state will be taking decide action against it. He also encouraged all the residents to clear the drainages in front of their homes to prevent flooding.
He solicited the help of the rich and wealthy in society to complement the government’s efforts to help the state’s flood-affected residents. He also urged them to support activities to prevent disasters in the state.
The Executive Secretary also disclosed that the state government, through the agency, will do all it can to ensure the safety of lives and properties in the state.
