Nigerian legendary footballer and former Super Eagles Coach Christian Chukwu has died at the age of 74. His death was confirmed earlier today by his colleague and long-time friend, Dr. Olusegun Odegbami.
The former Super Eagles coach passed away today being Saturday, 12th April 2025, which comes four years after a hoax spread, announcing his death in 2021.
False reports of Chukwu’s death circulated widely in 2021, prompting the legendary coach to refute the rumors during his 70th birthday celebration on January 4, 2021.
“I am terribly embarrassed with this news that I am dead. Several people have been calling me from across the world since the news broke. I am still investigating the source of the story.” Mr Christian Chukwu said.
Christian Chukuw’s death came as a shock to many, especially as the cause of his death is yet to be known as at the time of filling this report. Some many public figures have reacted to the news including his close acquaintance and former teammate Dr. Olusegun Odegbami.
Odegbami, who won the 1980 Africa Nation Cup with Chukwu, said: “I just received the news that between 9:00 and 10:00 this morning, ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu, MFR, my bosom friend and teammate, one of the greatest football players in Nigeria’s history, has passed on.
“Babuje, Emmanuel Okala, MON, gave me the sad news a few minutes ago. May ‘Onyim’ find peace with Our Creator in Heaven and console his family.” he added.
