An attack by some unknown gunmen have resulted in the death of three while five other persons were injured in the Isionye community, located on the boundary between Enugu Ukwu and Nawfia in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Narrating how the incident took place, a source in the community explained that the attackers had visited the community disguised as individuals who had intended to buy land and lured the victims into the said and launched the attack.
The incident happened on Monday, which left panic in the minds of the residents. The attacker had fired gunshots in the village, which had caused panic in the area.
One of the community members explained that they stored the community in Enugu Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government, in the evening and killed several people. The source disclosed that the assailants had stored the community in a Sienna vehicle while they pretended to be land buyers,
They continued by explaining that no one had suspected the individuals were with arms and other dangerous weapons until they started shooting. It was explained that the victims were the individuals who had taken them to the land area, while other residents of the community were hurt while trying to flee into the bushes.
While speaking on the incident, the Anambra State Police spokesman, Superintendent of Police Tochukwu Ikenga, on Tuesday explained that the police had recovered the vehicle used by the gunmen. He also noted that the command had started an investigation into the incident to unravel the cause of the attack and bring the accomplice to justice.
He noted that the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, had organised an investigation into the incident that claimed the lives of three people and the serious injury of five others on Monday, 9 September 2024, at 2 p.m. at Isionye land, a boundary between Enugu Ukwu and Nawfia.
He collaborated with the views of the community members by explaining that according to initial investigations, the suspect had arrived in the community and pretended to be land buyers and the persons who took them to the land area with dangerous weapons.
The command’s statement also called for calm in the community. It was disclosed that the command had taken custody of the vehicle left behind by the criminals.
Ikanga also disclosed that the person injured in the incident had been taken to the hospital for proper treatment while their testimonies were taken. The bodies of the person have equally been deposited in the morgue for treatment.
He noted that the police will make more information public in due course.
