Some suspected gunmen who are said to be cultists on Sunday invaded the Edeoha community in Aboada East Local Government Area of Rivers State and killed four residents in the early hours.

According to several reports, it was learnt that the suspects, who have been identified as members of the Iceland cult group, had invaded the community at about 2 am on Sunday with sophisticated weapons, shooting sporadically, which led to the death of four persons.

In the invasion the members of the community disclosed that the criminals conducted their operation going from house to house while they searched for their targets, the residents while the criminals arrived scampered for safety for fear of being hit by a stray bullet.

A resident in the community who spoke anonymously noted that the community was in shock when the attackers arrived as they did not know the reason for the invasion.

The community member noted that during the attack, the whole community was in total confusion when they arrived and shot anyhow. He disclosed that three of those killed are natives of Edeoha, while the other one is a native of the Ekata community still in Aboada East LGA but resides in Edeoha.

According to him, the belief of the community members is that the suspected Iceland cult members who carried out the killing came from a camp in a neighbouring community to carry out the overnight killing at Edeoha.

He also noted that the individuals who have died are not believed to be members of any cult group. Still, the attack is believed to have been carried out by cultists who may have been paid to eliminate the four residents over some unclear issues.

It was learnt that the Edeoha community is accessible by road from the Nbaima-Ahoada highway and is also surrounded by creeks and rivers, which hoodlums sometimes use as an advantage to commit different kinds of crimes against the residents.

The spokesperson for the State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident; she noted that the police have started an investigation to uncover the persons behind the crime.

She also noted that the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Mustapha, has directed the Ahoada Area Commander and the Divisional Police Officer to commence an investigation into the incident to apprehend the perpetrators and make them face justice.
