The Niger state government has issued a two-month ultimatum to residents living around the Kainji lake area to vacate as soon as possible, following heightened insecurity in the area.

The chief press secretary to the governor, Mr Bologi Ibrahim, stated this during a condolence visit to the Emir of Borgu, Alhaji Muhammad-Haliru Dantoro, Kitoro IV, at his palace in New Bussa on Wednesday.

Speaking on behalf of the governor, Mr Bologi Ibrahim said the resettlement of the residents will be necessary in order to give security operatives more convenient grounds to combat the insurgency and banditry that is prevailing in those areas and to avoid collateral damage in the process.

The governor’s aid added that the activities of informants in the area have made it so difficult for the efforts of the security operatives to yield meaningful results as they’re determined to flushing out the criminals who were using Kainji Lake as their camp.

He urge the residents to stop giving confidential information to the bandits, thereby giving them an edge to maneuver the security operatives.

Responding, the Emir pledged to work closely with relevant authorities to identify and prosecute informants in the Emirate, adding that the security of lives and property was paramount. He promised that no stone would be left unturned in securing the lives and property of his people and the area.
