Judicial workers under the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) have announced an emergency meeting over their displeasure with removing beneficiaries of the increment of salaries and allowances for judicial officers in the country.
The National President of the Association, Marwan Adamu, noted that the association was confused by the news report circulating about the increase in the salaries of judicial officers in the country. He explained that the increase does not affect other officers in the judiciary the categories he noted were from the chief registrar downward.
Though he expressed his displeasure, he further appreciated the president for his decision to sign the bill into law, which will improve the welfare of judicial office workers.
He noted that when the bill was at the stage of the public hearing, the workers at the judiciary were consulted, and several issues were raised. He noted that the inputs were made. He explained the major input was to ensure a holistic increase for the workers.
He revealed that the information circulating that all other individuals apart from judicial officers won’t benefit from the new law is contrary to their input. It was confusing to them, he said.
He explained that the union had summoned a meeting for Saturday to have concrete deliberations on the issues raised since the signing of the bill to review the issues and deliberate other issues relating to the judiciary in the county.
President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday assented to the bill, which seeks to increase the salaries and allowances of judges in the country by 300 percent.
With the new bill becoming law, the Chief Justice of Nigeria will earn N64 million annually. The increase also cut across judges and other senior court officers. The bill was presented to the NAtional Assembly in March 2024 by the President of the country.
The Presidnet has stated the signing of the bill shows his commitment to strnthning the judicial system in the country.
