The Kano state government, led by Abba Yusuf, has announced the distribution of essential working materials to 160 Community Development Associations across the state’s eight metropolitan local governments to mitigate the impact of flood disasters.
The state government announced the current distribution in a statement on Tuesday by the chief press secretary, Sanusi Tofa.
The statement explained that the governor had initiated the current distribution to maintain the drainage systems in the communities and city centres; he further explained that the initiative would promote sustainable urban development.
The governor noted that the short-term benefit of the distribution is to mitigate and keep the drainage systems clean while the action will provide more sustainability in health for the residents. He further explained that the cleanness of the drainage systems would bring more liveliness to the areas.
“The expected outcomes of this initiative include improved drainage infrastructure in targeted communities; reduced flooding and waterlogging incidents; enhanced public health safety; strengthened community cohesion and increased participation in governance.”
The governor further solicited the contribution of community stakeholders to ensure the actualization of the initiative, noting that the reason for using individuals in the communities depends on their ability to drive change and impact the communities.
The governor reiterated his commitment to building a sustainable city, calling on stakeholders and the private sector to help the government financially and technically contribute to the state’s growth.
The residents were warned of dumping refuse in the drainage systems, explaining that such actions put their lives and properties at risk.
The items distributed included 600 wheelbarrows, shovels, rain boots, diggers, fork-shovels, rakes, pans, hand gloves, and 150 first-aid boxes.
