The government of Kano State has announced a donation of N100 million to the victims of the recent fire at Kantin Kwari Textile Market.
The government announced the donation on Thursday in a statement released by Sanusi Tofa, the spokesperson for the governor.
The spokesperson disclosed that the announcement was part of the commitment made by the governor on Thursday when he paid a sympathy visit to the market. According to the governor, the donation was meant to compensate the people for the heavy losses that had been incurred by the traders in the market in the last fire incident. It was also explained that the donation would further help the traders cope with the disaster.
The governor disclosed that he will begin the process of improving the state of the market’s infrastructure through the installation of street lights, rehabilitating the road network, constructing drainages, and providing motorised boreholes, among other things.
The governor noted that the government will continue to make efforts to ensure that the state remains the commercial hub of Northern Nigeria and surrounding West African countries.
Reacting, the Managing Director of the Kantin Kwari Market Management Board, Hamisu Nama, explained that the fire incident had destroyed twenty-nine shops in the market. He explined that the early interventions of the fire fighters had resulted in the limitation of the rate of destruction.
