The Lagos state government has commenced investigation to ascertain what caused the death of Nkanu Nnamdi, the 21-month-old son of Author Chimamanda Adichie in a Lagos private hospital.
The renowned Author Chimamanda alleged that her son’s death was caused by what she described as “criminal negligence,” by the Euracare hospital staff.
Adichie, in a statement on Saturday, insisted that her son’s death was avoidable if not for the hospital’s negligence, accusing the anaesthesiologist involved of being “criminally negligent, fatally casual, and careless with the precious life of a child.”
Contrary to the earlier reports of the hospital which suggests the toddler had been rejected in two different hospitals before arriving in their facility due to the severity of the illness, the author claimed the child initially showed symptoms of a mild cold, which later deteriorated rapidly into a infection and nothing so severe.
Reacting to the allegation, Euracare Hospital, where the child was reportedly treated before passing away, said it had commenced an internal investigation into the incident and extend their sympathy to the family, describing the loss as “profound and unimaginable,” while maintaining that most of the reports surrounding the incident contained inaccuracies.
Meanwhile, the Lagos state government on Saturday disclosed that the governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu had directed the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency to immediately commence a thorough, independent and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
