The Lagos State Police Command arraigned Olajide Aro, a 54-year-old man, on Tuesday after he was alleged to have assaulted a staff member of Eko Electricity Distribution Company.
The accused was brought before the Chief Magistrate Court, Yaba, before Magistrate Patrick Nwaka and charged with four counts of assault, breach of peace, obstruction of legitimate duties, and causing physical injuries.
According to the charges, the accused, on July 18 2024, was found assaulting the EKEDC staff Adeniyi Mathew while he was on official duty, which is his legitimate right and duty.
It was noted that the accused Olajide and others in Ogbe Close, Iwaya, Lagos, had connived to restrain the electricity company worker from disconnecting the power of some residents who owed the power for power supply.
According to the prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, the alleged offence was committed on July 18, 2024, contravening Sections 411, 168(d), 116(1), and 173 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.
It was narrated that during the argument, which went violent and led to a fight, Olajide Alleg gave Adeniyi a blow on his face, which led to him sustaining a cut on his lips; the accused also tore his shirt during the incident.
The accused, who confessed to committing the crime at the Sabo Police Station, explained that the act resulted from the devil’s work. He noted that he never meant to assault the worker, but the argument went out of hand when they went into a heated argument.
The winds sustained by the EKEDC worker, the statement, and the torn shirt all serve as evidence in the case.
The magistrate refused to take the pleas of the accused and was asked to pay N200,000 and two sureties, who are residents of Lagos State, for bail.
The defendant was ordered to be remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre until he met his bail terms.
The case was adjoined till September 11 for further mention.
