The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has frowned against the IGP’s tenure extension and urged the Inspector General of Police (I-G) Kayode Egbetokun, to step aside and avoid anything that will undermine the progress and unity of the Nigerian police force.
In a statement issued by the Executive Director of MURIC, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, on Monday, the group feared that the extension could erode efficiency, breed division, and diminish public confidence in the police force.
This comes at the peak of the controversy surrounding the police amendment Act which gives the Inspector General of police the leverage to complete his tenure despite reaching his retirement age or completing his maximum service years.
The amended Section 18(8) of the Act allows the I-G to remain in office until the end of the term stipulated in the letter of appointment, rather than retiring at the age of 60.
The MURIC director acknowledged the significant strides made by the Nigerian police force in security improvement and maintenance of law and order in the country. However, the group registered their displeasure about the continued stay of Egbetokun in office and called it a “cause for concern”.
“MURIC’s intervention is significant, given the organisation’s focus on promoting and protecting the fundamental human rights of Nigerian Muslims.
“While the issue of the I-G’s tenure extension may not be directly related to Muslim rights, it has a bearing on the security and welfare of all Nigerians, including Muslims.
“The move has sparked debate, with some arguing that it is necessary to maintain continuity and stability in the police force, while others see it as a violation of the Police Act,” he said.
Prof Akintola on behalf of the group, urged the IGP to take a bow while his dignity remains intact and not allow the controversy to get messy and his clean record tarnished before doing the right thing.
“Real heroes leave the stage while the ovation is loudest,” he said, suggesting that Egbetokun should take a dignified exit rather than risk his legacy.
