The National Judicial Council has concluded plans to transmit Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun’s name to President Bola Tinubu on Friday as the recommendation for the post of Chief Justice of Nigeria.
The NJC Director of Information, Soji Oye, confirmed the next step on Thursday after the conclusion of the 106th meeting of the council, where she was nominated. He explained that since the nomination was concluded, the next thing to be done was to send the name to the President for approval.
Justice Kekere-Ekun was recommended by the NJC on Thursday during the 106th meeting. The meeting was presided over by the outgoing Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola. It has been seen as his last before proceeding on retirement. The Chief Justice of Nigeria has recommended that Justice Kekere-Ekun’s name be sent to the President.
The current chief justice will be formally leaving office as the CJN on August 22 of August 2024. It will mark the end of his service to the Nigeria judicial system
Suppose the President sees the nominated Justice Kekere-Ekun worthy. In that case, she will become the second female to take the seat of the CJN in the country after Justice Mariam Mukhtar, who took over the position in 2012 and ended in November 2014.
At the NJC meeting, 27 other individuals were recommended as judges of the state high courts, and one Khadi, whose name will also be sent to the various state governments for the president’s approval.
Accodiing to the procedure the nommited candidates will be sworn in after the president and the state governors have approved the names.
Six of the nominated candidates came from Kwara State HGH court. Their names include Olawoyin Olabisi, Abdulrazaq Funsho, Folorunsho Muritala, Dikko Adebayo, Adeniyi Adenike and Osuolale-Ajayi Olalekan. Kaduna state accounts for one candidate named Zubairu Ja’afaru.
Four candidates were nominated from Benue State: Kor Tersoo, Ikwulono Maimuna, Adagba Julie, and Tor Tersugh. Onche Inalegwu and Igba Terhile were the two others nominated for the posts in the customary court of appeal from Benue State.
Eight candidates from Rivers State were nominated for the high court; the candidates include Onyiri Frank, Ugoji Chinedum, Obomanu Vidal, Ogu guo Chituru, Fubara Elkanah, Kokpan Sylvester, Obu Madighi, and Wifa-Adedipe Lesi.
Six people were nominated for the high court candidates: Daomi Adebisi, Fabuluje William, Ogunwumiju Idowu, Demehin-Ogunbayo Happiness, Kpemi Justinah, and Adegoroye Adeola.
