The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in the Federal Capital Territory, in a recent statement, has disclosed that the recent activities of vandals in the FCT have resulted in damages that are estimated at N5m in public buildings.
The figures were presented on Monday by the FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu, at a press briefing after the arrest of 13 individuals who have been suspected of vandalizing critical national assets in the nation’s capital.
The commandant disclosed that the suspects were arrested in different parts of the FCT between Saturday, September 7, 2024, and Monday, September 9, 2024. According to the NSCDC boss, the suspects were arrested in connection with the vandalism of street light cables, billboards, armoured electrical cables, and iron rods.
The commandant disclosed that the suspects were arrested after intense surveillance and relevant information from the members of the public. The NSCDC boss further noted that the arrest was made possible by personnel from the critical National Assets and Infrastructure Department who went around different parts of the capital. The command further disclosed that the suspects had targeted different national assets in the FCT, which are valued at an estimated Five million naira with the current economic realities.
Speaking about the area where the suspects had carried out their activities, the commandant mentioned the Kukwaba Railways overhead bridge and Nnamdi Azikiwe Way. Other items recovered from the suspects, according to the NSCDC, were motorcycles, shovels, armoured cables, billboards, and iron rods.
The FCT commandant noted that the NSCDC will continue to conduct its operations in the nations capital to ensure the protection of all critical national assets in the nation’s capital. He warned all criminals in the FCT to stay away from criminal activities or face the law when caught.
The Commandant disclosed that the command was currently investigating the incident while suspects who have been found will be used to track all other individuals who have been in the business of buying and reselling the stolen items.
He noted that the command knew the area where the items were sold. He said the suspect would soon be arrested, and the individual would be charged to court to face the wrath of the law as soon as possible.
He concludes by warning all criminals who are currently in the FCT to relocate from the nation’s capital or stop the illegal acts which the victims are carrying out. The suspects were remanded in the NSCDC custody as the investigations were ongoing.
