As the crisis rocking the Laabour Pary gets deeper, the faction of the party led by Julius Abure has noted the Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the party in 2023, and Alex Otti, governor of Abia state, have backstabbed them after the elections.
The anger of the faction has come after the the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after series of demands have refused to recognise the Julius Abure as the chairman of the party. INEC’s position was contained in a counter affidavit filed in the Abuja federal high court.
In an earlier suit filed by the Abure-led LP faction challenged the INEC for rejecting them from uploading the names of party agents on the INEC website ahead of the Edo and Ondo governorship elections which will be holding in the country in 2024.
According to the INEC, they stated the tenure of the factional chairman expired in June 2024, which necessitated the rejection
The spokesperson of the faction in statement on Wednesday while reacting to the rejection state that took a dig at the contestants of the 2023 elections noting that some of the persons who are demanding the removal of Abure had no finances to purchase form in the elections.
He disclosed that the party had taken INEC to court to challenge the exclusion of the names by the commission for the refresher training and the uploading of the names of the party agents.
The INEC went on to argue that the Labour Party’s leadership, including Julius Abure, is now invalid, stressing that it does not recognise the party’s March 2024 National Convention, which re-elected Abure as chairman.
He noted that the party was disappointed at the actions of the former presidential candidate Peter Obi and the only Labour Party governor, Dr. Alex who should stand with the party at the critical moment.
The spokesperson noted that the part big weights should know that the party was passing through a difficult moment which was caused by the support given to the two leaders in the build up to the 2023 elections. He noted that the labour party was open in taking some of the leaders like Peter Obi after their initial party had denied them the nomination if their former party.
He noted that after all the efforts by the party, the leaders have now decided to play with the party in the way they want, which is shameful.
In the party’s latest stakeholder meeting, Nenadi Usman, a former senior in the country, was appointed the national chair of the LP caretaker committee. The governor of Abia state called the meeting Alex Otti. Other individuals who attended the meeting were Obi, and Datti Baba-Ahmed, LP vice-presidential candidate in 2023.
