Forty drug dealers in the popular Swees Spirit Hotel junction in Asaba, Delta State capital, have been arrested by the police after a raid of their hideout by the officers.
The police and other security officers in the state collaborated and conducted an operation at the Asaba/Okpanam Road, near the Midwifery market, on Tuesday night. This operation led to the arrest of the suspect, who is currently in custody.
The operation, according to reports, was embarked upon after the security agencies in the state got reliable intelligence about the activities of criminals in the place; some of the activities included illicit drug trading, which has caused harm and distress to the community.
A security source in the area who spoke to the press explained that the operation was executed by discrete officers who had received credible information about the people’s various activities.
The source disclosed that the suspect when they saw the police, tried to run away by jumping into the storm drainage along Okpanam Road, but the officers who were ready and coordinated followed them and arrested 40 persons who had been taken into custody.
The source further explained that the exercise was a message to the people in the state that the security agencies were ready to fight the use of illicit drugs in the state and other criminal activities that are against the law.
According to the source, the raid was a warning sign to the criminals that such activities were a game. This is a usual explanation that the government was ready to take action against such activities, which would ensure the safety of all individuals in the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, also confirmed the arrest when she was contacted. According to the PPRO, 40 persons were arrested, and an official statement will be issued soon.
