George Mfongang, the coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps in Rivers, has expressed concern over the number of graduates leaving the country in search of a better life abroad.
The coordinator who spoke on Tuesday while receiving the Rivers commander of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Nwamaka Ikediashi, noted that Nigeria was a great country that has great potential for the youths.
He noted that the citizens of the country and its leader need to be humble and patriotic to improve the condition of the country in many ways. The Rivers commander was in his office to seek permisn to be allowed to sensitise corps members during orientation camps on the dangers of illegal migration.
The state NYSC coordinator advised her to send her request to the NYSC headquarters through NAPTIP Headquarters. He explained that the corps members would reap numerous benefits from the sensitization if the NYSC headquarters allowed the programme to be included in the timetable nationwide.
Mr Mfongang advised her to channel the request to NYSC headquarters through NAPTIP Headquarters. He assured Ikediashi that corps members in Rivers would benefit more from the sensitisation if NYSC included the NAPTIP proposal in its orientation timetable nationwide.
While speaking, the commander of NPTIP explained that her visit was to seek possible ways of collaboration with the management of NYSC to help enlighten corp members on the dangers of illegal migration, especially among young graduates.
She noted that NAPTIP at management has resolved to speak with NYSC, where a strategic partnership will be formed. The aim is to speak to the hearts and consciences of corps members and dissuade them from illegal migration because of the dangers involved in the act.
She noted that the activities of fake agencies and agents were rampant in the country. She advised corp members to avoid their activities as much as possible.
Nwamaka noted that youths have been taught that they will get good jobs and relocate to better areas outside the country.
She added that some graduates had fallen victim to such a situation, which has caused heavier problems for them. She explained all of the issues begin with fake promises, which turn to prostitution and other illegal activities such as drug peddling, slave labour and harvesting of organs
