On Wednesday night, there was chaos in the Obosi village in the Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State after some unidentified assailants shot at Sir Dan Igbokwubili, the town’s chief security officer.
Although the cause of the attack was not immediately known, it was learnt that the thugs, who were thought to be assassins, ambushed Igbokwubili by the side of the road and started shooting at his car as soon as they saw it.
Igwe Chidubem Iweka, also known as Eze Iweka III, the traditional ruler of the Obosi Kingdom, and his cabinet members named Igbokwubili, an ex-police officer, as the community’s CSO.
Witnesses in the town reported that during the confrontation, the thugs shot the victim’s car numerous times before setting it on fire. Despite this, no lives were lost.
One of the sources said, “He was accosted along the road by the assassins while driving home. They had laid an ambush along the road and as Igbokwubili was driving past, they opened fire on his vehicle, riddled it with bullets while he fell, and pretended to be dead.
“As he regained his consciousness, he took to his heels and was pursued by one of the assassins, but as a trained police officer, he retreated and kicked the assassin with his leg, hitting him on the penis and when the assassin slumped, he barely managed to escape and rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
“The incident created panic in the community as residents scampered to safety as bullets were sounding heavy.”
Igwe Chidubem Iweka, the community’s traditional ruler, confirmed the news over the phone and expressed remorse that the attack occurred during a time when the people were celebrating their freedom from the control of cults, assassins, and kidnappers.
Iweka did, however, caution that the Obosi community would not stand by and let criminals have a field day in the town, even as he stated that more work is still being done to find the offenders.
Tochukwu Ikenga, the state police spokesman, acknowledged the event and stated that the police were pursuing the offenders when he was contacted about the situation.
Ikenga said, “Yes, we are aware of the incident and we have got a clue. We are following up regarding the incident for possible arrest. The situation in the area is calm and further developments will be communicated please.”
