Three young girls who had gone out to each grass for their livestock in Buji Local Government Area of Jigawa State have drowned in a pound near the area in the state.
The spokesperson for the state command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, ASC Badaruddeen Tijuana, confirmed the incident in a statement in Dutse on Sunday. He explained that the incident was reported to the NSCDC personnel deployed to the area. He noted that the personnel received a distress call and rushed to the scene of the incident.
The statement further explained that the personnel arrived at the scene with Divisional Disaster Management Officers to rescue the victim at about 11 am on Saturday. He explained that after a 30-minute search in the pound, the bodies of the girls were recovered with the combined efforts of locals in the community.
He named the victims Atima Sule, 12; Nasiya Sale, 12; and Huwaila Sa’adu, 13, all of Tulla village.
After the bodies were recovered, the spokesman noted that bodies were rushed to the hospital that was close to the community, where medical personnel, after a series of checks, confirmed that the victims had died.
According to him, preliminary investigations have revealed that the deceased ladies had gone out to get some grasses from their livestock, but unfortunately, a part pound collapsed, which led to the drawing of the victims.
He noted that the command had handed over the bodies of the ladies to their respective parents, who had gone on to bury them according to the traditions and practices of the Islamic religion which they practice.
The NSCDC Commandant in the state, Mr Muhammad Danjuma, who comiserated with the families of the victims, advised parents and guidance of teenagers in the state to monitor the movement of their children at every instance, he explained that the rainy season has increased the water levels in different rivers and pounds which posed a heavy risk for every individual especially children.
