Adegboruwa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria has described the president’s democracy day speech as nothing but a rehearsal of history as none of the nations challenges were addressed in the speech, he went on to say the country is a in a pitiful state and he is not pleased that the challenges which the citizens are facing were not addressed by the president.
Adegboruwa stated all of these while being interviewed by Channels Television on Wednesday, 12th June, he said ” I listened to the speech of the president, unfortunately, i am unable to agree that anything has changed”
According to him, despite the commemorating the essence of the democracy day celebration which marks the 1993 presidential election victory of MKO Abiola, the government has not done anything reasonable to uphold the democratic principles.
“I am sorry, i am not impressed in anyway at all by the speech of the President, in the sense that it is just rehearsing of history” Adegboruwa said.
Further on, he added that so much more is expected from the President, who is at the forefront of all of the democratic challenges and also at the edge of all the the country’s affairs.
“For me, looking at the past one year and indeed, our collective history from the time we started agitating for democracy, things have gotten worse, nothing has changed at all,” the senior lawyer complained.
The human rights lawyer said the struggles of June 12 were all done and endured in a bid to see that the 1993 election which were dissolved by the military were recognized.
The dream was to make sure that all subsequent elections would be practically better than what happened in 1993, and according to him this dream had been deferred a long time ago, seeing that even the circumstances that brought the current president into power are not clean and has various questions that have not been answered since his assumption into office as the president.
Adegboruwa also said that “I expect that on a day like this, all Nigerians who are being held in custody wrongfully should be releases.” adding to this, he said that on a very special day like this constituent units of the nation should be engaged to to confirm the truth whether Nigeria practices the true principles of democracy.
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria said that, the democracy day celebration should be a road map to be considered in other to achieve true freedom, which according to him was a fore most part of today but was ignored by the president.
