The United Bank of Africa has been criticised for freezing the account of the human rights organization leading the August 1st-10 #badgovernance protest account with the bank.
The Take It Back Movement (TIB) condemned the act in a tweet on Friday. The organization alleged that the freezing of the account infringed on their rights as Nigerians.
The organization has threatened to drag the bank to court if the accounts are not unfrozen within 48hrs
In a further allegation, the organization explained that the bank’s actions have coexisted with the directorate of state service in Nigeria.
The converter of the #RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowoe, has confirmed the bank’s act. In a post on his X handle, he explained that the act showed the group’s level of lawlessness. He went further to threaten the bank, noting that they will learn much in no distant time.
“Lawless @OfficialDSSNG will learn a hard lesson soon, and @UBAGroup, @TonyOElumelu, for this act of cowardice and conspiracy, the people of Nigeria that you’re letting down at this critical moment in history will let you down soon, too! #DaysOfRage,” Sowore said on X.
In seeking a venue for the protest, the organizers reportedly wrote officially to the Minister of FCT Nyesom Wike on Friday seeking approval to use Eagles Square for the August Protest.
In a letter written to the Minister, the organizers requested the provision of basic amenities at the venue, including water, power supply, and security; they also asked the minister to grant unrestricted access to the venue to maintain law and order.
In an earlier message on Thursday, the minister asked the residents of the FCT to come out on the 1st of August for celebrations rather than to protest.
He further explained that the Federal Capital Territory was not available for protest while cautioning the organisers and participants of the protest.
Wike, who briefly journalist on Thursday, noted that the government in the nation’s Capital have planned different activities to mark the beginning of the month.
He noted that on the first day of the month, six Area Councils of the FCT will be giving out certificates of recognition to their traditional rulers who have deserved recognition in the past years.
He explained that the day the government set aside as a day of celebration and jubilation would not be allowed to be used as a day for protest; he categorically stated that the government would allow such disruption in the FCT.
The Minister, who downplayed reasons to protest, established that all Nigerians should collectively work together to restore the country’s dignity at the present time; he further noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his team have been in top gear to fix the country’s economic problems.
He noted that the president had been informed of the country’s challenges and that massive efforts would be channelled toward solving them.
The Minister praised the developmental projects in the FCT and established that such changes will be felt in other aspects of the economy. He also praised the president’s support in achieving success.
