It has been confirmed that Akua Donkor, the founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), passed away on Tuesday. It was confirmed that she had passed away at Ridge Hospital in Accra. The officials did not disclose further details about the death of the leader.

A family source spoke about the death of the leader while speaking on Citi FM on Tuesday, October 29. It was noted that the leader had passed away on Monday at the hospital on Monday, October 28.

Akua Donkor was a prominent and spirited voice in Ghanaian politics, known for her dedication to advocating for farmers’ and women’s rights.

After founding the GFP, she was recognised as a major figure in the Ghanian political scene. She often captured the public’s attention with her bold and outspoken approach to addressing the needs of grassroots communities.

In her struggle, she was known for participating in the presidential elections multiple times, even despite her low financial status. She was underrated by the limited resources that were available to her.

She had contested in two previous elections, and Akua Donkor was listed as the third candidate on the ballot for the 2024 presidential race. Her passing marks the end of an era, closing a unique chapter in Ghana’s political history.

The late GFP leader began her presidential aspirations when she was elected as the Assemblywoman for Herman. Her first presidential attempt came in 2012 when she applied to run as an independent candidate.

However, the Electoral Commission disqualified her because she did not meet the eligibility requirements. Although Akua Donkor disagreed with this decision, she did not resort to legal redress. Instead, she supported Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).

She was once again disqualified in 2016 after the fire in early January gutted her Ghana Freedom Party’s (GFP) headquarters in Kabul, located in the Eastern Region.
