According to Aidan Kohn-Murphy, founder of the advocacy group Gen-Z for Change, the influence of social media on this age group can not be underrated. He noted in an interview with CNN that the use of TikTok has helped many young prospective voters learn a great deal about the candidates and their campaigns, which will also influence their choice of candidate.
Kohn-Murphy noted that some of the key issues relatable to young voters in the elections included climate, reproductive justice, gun violence, and Biden’s incredibly unpopular support for the Israeli government. He further stated that the young voters who have been using social media have been using TikTok to share different information utilizing the peer-to-peer model, which can influence their support for a candidate.
He also mentioned that many first-time voters did not have previous political humiliations, such as former President Donald Trump’s Access Hollywood tape, on their radar. Still, social media enabled them to learn more about the candidates.
He disclosed that he and other older people were between fifth and seventh grade when the Access Hollywood tapes came out. He further noted they have gotten numb to Trump’s horrible words and actions. However, we have not heard these things, and I think that TikTok has provided a way to remind and shock young people.
