It has been disclosed that President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team has started to consider an end to the program initiated by the Joe Biden administration, which has allowed the entrance of more than 1.3 million immigrants into the US legally, making those who entered but have not yet received asylum eligible for deportation,
There are currently no official figures for the person who may fall victim to deportation, but it has been suggested that the number might get to hundreds of thousands.
The plan to end the programme, which the current administration started, has come after Trump, during his campaigns, disclosed his plans to carry out mass deportations. It is now taking shape after his victory in the election that saw him defeated by Kamala Harris. It has been revealed that Trump’s transition team is considering plans designed to maximize the scope of the deportations and prioritize certain immigrants as among the first to be forced to leave.
Reports have suggested that some persons who have entered the country through the process might be eligible for deportation. It was stated that the first group of persons to be considered to leave are those who have been marked as threats, including Chinese men who are deemed to be of military age and living illegally in the United States. It was also stated that the government will also consider the deportation of convicted criminals who are in the U.S. illegally and those with final orders of deportation.
Some of the migrants who will be spared after their arrival in the country under the Biden administration programs include CBP One and the Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela (CHNV) parole program. They have been spared for deportation because they have been granted asylum or are on the path toward it or have another legal status to stay in the United States.
Any other individuals who do not have the requisite documents to be deported, as stated, will be deported as the elected president has stated that they have plans to deport all the individuals as the numbers are projected to be high.
The source also noted that some of the persons may not be considered the top priority for deportation as soon as Trump takes over, but they may eventually be deported as time goes on.
The program initiated by the president has been seen as an effort to increase the legal pathway for people who wish to migrate into the US while disincentivizing illegal border crossings.
There have been fears that the deportation of the set of individuals may lead to some legal tussle as they have entered the country through the legitimate route. Efforts to speak with a spokesperson for the Trump campaign failed as they did not respond to a request sent to them.
Some immigration advocates applauded the Biden administration programs. They have been projected to be some of the individuals who will support the individuals in court by asking the judges to block the deportation of the group of persons. The group, during the first administration of Trump, has asked judges to stop the administration’s plans to end the DACA program for immigrants brought to the U.S. as children.
In a ruling, the Supreme Court struck down the Trump administration’s attempt to end DACA in 2020. The judgement was passed before the court switched to a conservative supermajority. One immigration advocate, speaking anonymously because they did not want to discuss potential litigation, said the new administration should expect legal challenges.
It was revealed that over 531,0000 nationals of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela had entered the U.S. through the CHNV parole program, which was created to allow migrants from those countries to apply for entry from their home countries with the help of a U.S.-based sponsor.
Also, it has been disclosed that 852,000 migrants have entered through CBP One. The program was designed for migrants who had left their home countries and were waiting in northern Mexico. It was a Cellphone application program in which immigrants could apply for an appointment to be considered illegible to be taken into the country even if they did not meet all the criteria.
Officials revealed that the government will find it easier to find the individuals who have applied through the program because they initially provided their address, residence, and other information during the application process, which makes it easier to apprehend such persons and deport them.
