Darwin only had the privilege of attending primary school and subsequently channelled all his energy into developing his football skills.

During the trial, he became ill and couldn’t continue. He returned to live with his parents in Pirata. His trial grace was restored when he recovered from the sickness and returned to Penarol to continue his try-out.

Subsequently, he was signed by a Uruguayan club but suffered a severe knee injury, which took him away again for over a year; upon his return, coach Leo Ramos signed him, and he joined the first team and made his debut. He played out his heart on their game against Maxi Rodriguez but went back in tears as the knee injury was yet to be fully healed. That mandated him to undergo a second surgery on his kneecap, and he later made a huge comeback; he managed to scale through the squad list for the 2019 South American U-20 Championship, where he still struggled and didn’t perform as was expected of him; however, his resilience and determination remained steadfast.

He eventually migrated to Europe and joined Spanish Segunda Division club Almeria, which signed him for a five-year contract for a whopping US$4.5 million club record fee plus $1.5 million in variables. He made his first debut as a second-half substitution on October 3, 2017, during their match against Sporting Gijon, which ended in a 4–2 defeat. He scored his first goal for his new club and granted them victory in their match against Extremadura through a penalty kick. He became the fourth top scorer of the season at the Estadio de los Juegos Mediterráneos with 16 goals, which he scored almost twice in each appearance.

With his unwavering determination to become a champ, Darwin, Nunez kept honing his skills and later joined his national team to play in the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup, where he netted a goal in the opening match which ended in 3–1 against Norway. He led the goal that granted them a 2–0  win over New Zealand in the final group match, to aid Uruguay finish top of Group C. He also played in the under-22 team that finished fourth place at the 2019 Pan American Games in Peru, scoring in a 2–0 opening win over the hosts.
