British star, Andy Murray has announced his withdrawal from the tennis singles at the ongoing Paris Olympics, an announcement that has been greeted with mixed emotions by sports lovers around the world. But will still take part in the doubles, the two-time gold medallist said on Thursday.
The former world number one who had earlier announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2024 Paris Olympics shocked his fans with his withdrawal on Thursday through a post on his social media handles.
In his earlier announcement, the British star stated that the series of Injuries he has suffered has affected his play which has necessitated his decision to withdraw from the singles
“It’s hard because I would love to keep playing but I can’t. Physically it is too tough now, all of the injuries, they have added up and they haven’t been insignificant.”
The 37-year-old who spoke about his practice with Dan Evans, noted “I’ve taken the decision to withdraw from the singles to concentrate on the doubles with Dan,”
He further expressed his hopefulness stating that “Our practice has been great and we’re playing well together. Really looking forward to getting started and representing GB one more time.”
He won gold in singles in London in 2012 and in the Rio Olympics four years later, as well as silver in mixed doubles with Laura Robson in 2012.
