After missing a penalty kick in extra time of Portugal’s Euro 2024 semifinal match against Slovenia on Monday, Cristiano Ronaldo broke down in tears. In a tight goalless draw in Frankfurt, Ronaldo had a chance to put Portugal ahead late in the first overtime period.
Following a foul on Diogo Jota, the 39-year-old went up to attempt the spot kick, but Jan Oblak made a fantastic save to keep it out. Ronaldo held his head in surprise, clearly shocked to see Oblak block his shot after scoring his previous 29 penalties.
Ronaldo began sobbing aloud as he stood in a group of Portugal players a few seconds after the whistle for half-time in extra time blew. When the game resumed, Ronaldo was able to wipe away his tears and play again after being comforted by teammate Joao Palhinha.
After watching his impassioned reaction on the Frankfurt Arena’s big screen, Portugal supporters chanted “Viva Ronaldo.”
Ronaldo, a former star of Real Madrid and Manchester United, has now missed three of his nine penalty kick attempts at important international competitions.
