The Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Dije Abdu-Aboki, has ordered the release of 37 inmates from the Goron Dutse Medium Security Custodial Centre, which has been part of the effort of the state to reduce the number of people at the custodian Centre.
It was explained that the government decided to release the inmates because of their deteriorating health conditions and their prolonged detention without trial. It was noted that some of the inmates were reported to have some health challenges, which have become severe and have continued to grow worse within the time that they have spent at the correctional centre. Justice Abdu-Aboki stressed that the lack of satisfactory medical care in the facility further compromised their well-being.
He explained that when released, some of the inmates can seek better health care outside the custodian centre, which will be the best decision for their livelihood. He also explained that some of the inmates had been held for an extended period without facing trial, raising concerns about violations of their rights.
While speaking with the released persons Justice Abdu-Aboki charged them to turn a new leave and maintain good behaviour he further charged them to be maintain good behaviour that is acceptable in their societies with out any bad conduct that will bring them back into the custodian centre. The released persons were given ₦10,000 each which is part of the reintergration strategy of the government and money for transportation.
The Controller of Corrections in Kano State, Mr. Ado Inuwa, appreciated the Chief Judge for the steps taken and the gestures given to the inmates. He noted that the release was a good step in addressing an important challenge in the prison, which is the congestion of the custodian centres. He also noted that the act reflected compassion toward the health and rights of inmates.
He lauded the CJ’s commitment to improving conditions within Nigeria’s correctional system and ensuring that justice is served fairly.
