The former governor of Kogi state, Yahaya Bello, has disclosed that he has honoured the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s invitation.
The former governor, who has been hiding from the EFCC for the past months, on Wednesday confirmed his readiness to visit the commission and answer all the relevant questions the media office said
In a statement signed by the Director of the Yahaya Bello Media Office, Ohiare Michael explained that the former governor had decided to honour the invitation by the EFCC after several consultations from the family, legal team, and political associates.
The sattemt disclosed that the former governor on Wednesday was accompanied by different individuals in the country who have been described as high ranked. The governor has been in hiding after the EFCC alleged series of financial impropriety while he was the governor of Kogi State.
The EFCC had brought a 19 counts related to money laundering to the tune of N80.2 billion. He was charged alongside three others in the state.
The statement noted that after the former governor decided to honour the EFCC, he visited the common to clear his name. Nothing that was secret to hiding was he was not afraid of anything.
The statement also noted that the allegation had been taken before a competent court of jurisdiction and the former governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello had been duly represented by his legal team at every hearing. He noted after the series of invitation it was important for the former governor to visit the commission and clear his name.
The statement, while speaking on the efforts of the government, noted that the former governor, who is a member of the APC, believes in the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to place Nigeria on the path of sustainable economic development. He also noted that Yahaya Bello supports every action aimed at reducing the rate of corruption in the country.
In April, the EFCC chairman, Ola Olukoyede, stated that he would try by all means to ensure the arrest of the former governor, or he would resign. He also noted that he would follow the prosecution of the former governor to the logical conclusion. He also vowed that all those who obstructed the arrest of the former governor would be brought to justice.
Efforts to speak with the EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, were unsuccessful, as the press could not reach him at his numbers.
