A boat mishap in Jigawa on Thursday claimed the lives of five persons around the Gamoda River in Nahuce village, in the Taura Local Government Area of the state.
The state Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Lawan Shiisu, who confirmed the incident on Friday in Dutse, the state capital, explained that the boat covered 20 passengers when the unfortunate incident happened at about noon.
He noted that when the incident was reported to the police, a team of police operatives was dispatched to the scene. The PPRO explained that the police, local divers, and other good Samaritans started the rescue mission at the river immediately.
He explained that the command had received a list of five individuals who had tragically died from the unfortunate incident. The names of the victims were listed as Abdurra’uf Mohd, 15; Suleman Ali, 20; Shafiu Mohd, 25; Ado Nafance, 75, and Alasan Mohd, 16, all of Taura LGA of the state.
The PPRO mentioned that the police in a combined efforts with the local divers and other well-mannered individuals in the community had begun efforts to rescue the victims who were still trapped inside the water.
According to his statement, the Commissioner of Police in the state commiserated with the victim’s families and prayed for the peaceful rest of the departed souls.
Jigawa is one state in the northern part of Nigeria with a yearly occurrence of both accidents, which have always claimed so many lives.
In July 2024, a boat accident which happened at the Kwalgai River in Auyo Local Government Area of Jigawa State claimed one life while other 18 victims were successfully rescued from the accident,
