The Enugu State Government has disclosed that the state is currently witnessing Cholera outbreak in the state. The state government has further urged the citizens to take precautions to avoid its spread.

The outbreak was confirmed by the state Commissioner for Health, Emmanuel Obi, in a statement made public on Monday by the Senior Special Assistant to Enugu Governor Peter Mbah on Mainstream Media, Mr Dan Nwomeh, on Monday in Enugu. The statement noted that the public should be informed that the Ministry of Health has received reports from the communities that cholera has taken over some parts of the state, unlike the crisis that is being managed nationwide.

The commissioner noted that the cholera is spread by contaminated food or water and causes acute watery diarrhoea (watery stool), adding that if left untreated, it could lead to death within hours.

The statement further noted that the persons affected by the disease could also experience other symptoms like vomiting and abdominal cramps.

The commissioner said that, in collaboration with its partners, the ministry had initiated all necessary steps to de-escalate the situation according to the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control guidelines.

The statement further charged the public to remain vigilant and stay true to all the guidance and protocols that have been released by the state government, which included the practice of good hand hygiene by washing hands regularly with soap and running water or alternatively using hand sanitisers.

The residents were also urged to use potable water from reliable sources, intensify safe practices of food handling and preparation hygiene, wear gloves and face masks, and be careful when caring for sick individuals.

They stated that they should report all suspected cases to the health authorities imminently for prompt attention, especially cases of watery diarrhoea, to the closest hospitals in the state.

It was also disclosed that the Enugu state Ministry of Health was committed to informing and safeguarding the health and well-being of the citizens.

For further information, the citizens were urged to call the following numbers
1. 08037431577 – Director of Public Health and Disease Control,

2. 08033375344 – State Epidemiologist,

3.08037817982 – State Disease Surveillance and Notification officer,” he advised.
