One Nonso Ibekwe, a 48-year-old estate agent, was on Friday brought before the Ebute-Metta Magistrate Court in Lagos State for a case that alleged he defrauded his client, Samuel Samuel Ugbo, of N36m with the pretence of selling land.
According to the case, the defendant committed the offences in 2023, and the police filed three counts of charges bordering on conspiracy obtaining by pretence and stealing preferred.

In explaining the complaint to the court, the prosecution told the court that the victim was told the land was available for purchase before the accused paid the said amount to Ibekwe. The prosecution explained that the accused performed the act out of false pretence, but Ugbo had sent the money out of good faith and trust.
After the payment was made to the accounts provided by the accounts provided by the accused, it was clear in few months that the land which he has always promised was never available anywhere and the business was a complete sham.
The prosecutor argued that the offences committed contravened Sections 325, 314, (1),(2),3, and 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015, which comprise the charges.
The defendant went on to plead not guilty to the charges levelled against him, denying that he committed the offences.
The accused was granted bail by Magistrate Waliu Salami, at the sum of one million naira and two sureties in like sum
The magistrate explained that the sureties must provide evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government and have their addresses verified.
The case was adjourned till September 18, 2024.
